Every smoker who calls or comes in for a no charge consultation asks me, "How many sessions will it take?" There is no out-of-the-box program that works for every smoker.

Every smoker who calls or comes in for a no charge consultation asks me, “How many sessions will it take?”

The best answer I have is based on each individuals smoking profile.

Many, many people who are ready, ready, ready and can’t wait to be smoke-free have stopped smoking in one power-packed session. (I spend about 2 – 2 1/2 hours with these clients.) This past winter a musician who plays in smokey clubs and bars came in. His motivation was incredibly strong and he was confident that he would be successful with one session. And, he was. A few weeks later his girlfriend called to say how amazed she was with his success and she booked a series of weight reductions sessions.

For others, it may take two and sometimes three sessions.

Often I accept clients with major medical challenges who have been told by their doctor that they have to stop. Even though their health is suffering they know they should quit but just haven’t been able to do so in the past. They begin the program somewhat reluctantly as they still have a fondness for their smokes. I start them out with a program of gradually cutting back and picking a special day to be their “Stop Smoking Day.” When the Stop Smoking Day arrives I guide them into a long hypnosis session where they disconnect all of the links and triggers to their old habit. That’s when they walk out of the office smiling with confidence they they are finally free. I have these folks come back in a few days later to reinforce all their new learning and to increase their comfort with being a contented, permanent non-smoker.

There is no out-of-the-box program that works for every smoker.

I spend a lot of time conversing with every client to make certain their needs are being met. From time-to-time I’ll add Parts Hypnosis or Regression Hypnosis to help clients move beyond other issues that block their success.

The goal is to help those who want to move beyond their smoking habit to become comfortable with their new healthier lifestyle free of tobacco.

I have seen first hand over the years how hypnosis has assisted so many cancer patients to gain control over their emotions, physical symptoms, and their behavior.

The American Cancer Association has a book titled: A Breast Cancer Journey (2006) which is a very good guide for women who need to make important health care choices once they have been diagnosed with breast cancer. Besides page after page of treatment guidlines for patients provided by the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, the book has wonderful section on “How Complimentary Methods Can Enhance Your Life.”

Although many physicians don’t discuss complimentary methods of care, it is a know fact that most cancer patients seek out and use many methods to assist them in moving through their cancer journey. On page 142 the authors discuss Hypnosis.

“Hypnosis is an effective tool for reducing blood pressure, pain, anxiety, nausea, vomiting, phobias, and aversions to certain cancer treatments.”

I have seen first hand over the years how hypnosis has assisted so many cancer patients to gain control over their emotions, physical symptoms, and their behavior. It can ease the stress of the diagnosis, assist patients in remaining calm when faced with future procedures and medical appointments, and be assistive in helping patients to focus on their own inner healing power.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and because of wonderful organizations like the Susan B. Komen For the Cure and Livestrong, Breast Cancer is in the news. People around the nation are gathering to find new ways to beat this desease.

I do my part by volunteering hypnosis services to local women facing and experiencing this miserable disease. Let me know, if I can be of service to you or someone you know.

The dentist arrived and began his work. This patient remained relaxed with her eyes closed and willingly opened her mouth for the injections. She was able to respond to the dentists questions while remaining hypnotized and comfortable. I continued to deepen her hypnosis throughout the treatment while giving her hypnotic suggestions to assist her comfort.

I recently had a client with very special needs. She is a mentally retarded adult, age 56, and she is very afraid of the dentist. Unfortunately, she needed to have seven teeth extracted and her family was having difficulty getting her to accept the procedure.

Early in childhood, this woman had no way of understanding what was happening when she went to the dentist. Even now as an adult, she has the understanding of a clever 6 year old. In the 1950′s her family had a dentist who did not commonly use Novocain and resorted to tie-down techniques in order to get his job done. She feared going for checkups and every time she had a cavity, her fear of the dentist and his needles increased.

As she grew, she needed orthodontia and was a recalcitrant patient. Every visit was a battle and her fear continued to compound.

Then, in her 40′s, she lost all of her top teeth and some of her bottom teeth. On top she ended up with a full plate and on the bottom a partial. However, due to lack of care of her few remaining teeth they started to rot and break causing gum infections and an overall deterioration of her health.

Extraction of the remaining teeth was her only option. But how?

Her family turned to me for help. I traveled to her home on a Friday evening in August and asked her if she would “talk” with me for awhile. She was willing. Within moments she was in a relaxed and comfortable hypnotic trance where I prepared the groundwork for her hypnosis training.

On Saturday, I did another session with her. She responded immediately and enjoyed the visualizations we created for her to have a safe, comfortable place she could go in her own mind whenever she felt fear or stress.

I saw her again on Sunday morning. This time when we talked, I did what we call in the field of hypnotherapy a trauma reversal. She followed instructions and did an outstanding job. She thoroughly enjoyed the session and remarked how happy she felt when we were done.

On Sunday evening, I returned and we did a longer session focused on her safe, comfortable place and how easy it is to relax even when she is afraid. She really enjoyed our time together and liked the way she felt. “Oh Jo, I feel so relaxed. Even my arms feel heavy. I’m relaxed everywhere. I can do it.” The family kept her entertained and distracted for the rest of that day by going to see the 3-D movie Despicable Me.

Late Monday morning, I arrived and did a visualization rehearsal with her of going to the dental office while she was feeling as relaxed as she did in hypnosis. While she was hypnotized, I went over everything that would happen in the office reinforcing for her that she could really enjoy herself while reclining in the dental chair.

After lunch, I went with her and the family to the dentist. The dental assistant had a rolling stool for me next to the dental chair. I had prearranged with the dentist to give us ten minutes alone in the treatment room before he came in. During that time, I helped her achieve a very deep state of hypnotic trance. She felt comfortable and relaxed. Her previous history in this room was one of vigilant alertness, constant movement, and endless argument.

During this time, assistants looked in, the dentist looked in, her family came to the door and looked in – all were surprised that she was comfortably reclined back in the chair.

Finally the dentist arrived and began his work.

The procedure that all expected to take over an hour was accomplished in just over 30 minutes. During that time, the patient even giggled and laughed along with the imagery we created prior to the procedure. I was amazed that the giggling occurred during removal of one of the more difficult teeth.

Using hypnosis for dentistry goes back hundreds of years. Even though there are wonderful dental techniques for comfort control they don’t work if a dentist can’t get the patient to calm down enough to move forward with treatment. This is where hypnodontics comes in and can be a wonderful adjunct to traditional dentistry.

I received this gracious card from a client with a morbid fear of flying. When she first came to visit, she even had trouble as a passenger going down long swooping hills. She went easily into hypnosis where we worked on the cause of her fear. Rapidly she was able to let go of the events that created this lifelong incapacity. She is now in her senior years and enjoying her retirement even more now that she can freely travel to visit family. I understand she and her husband have far reaching travel plans that include many more airline flights.

Is everyone with ADHD a candidate for hypnosis treatment?

However, hypnosis cannot hurt anyone (as long as it is performed by a qualified professional), and anyone can learn self-hypnosis. It’d be a great adjunct with medication and healthy lifestyle choices, and other self-monitoring techniques for managing ADHD.

Why is hypnosis not as common a treatment for ADHD as Medication or behavior modification therapy?

Hypnosis certainly is becoming more mainstream, fortunately, and the trend will accelerate. It is low-cost (compared to long-term therapy) and natural.”

Willie Nelson sang “You were always on my mind.” Most everyone has had that experience after a break-up.You just can’t get that person out of your mind. Maybe you loved them and they left. Or, maybe you were in a dysfunctional relationship and had to get out of it. The pain of the break-up just keeps running like an endlesslylouped tape incessantly playing over and over and over again.

People often call and ask, “Can you give me amnesia? I don’t want to ever think about them again.”

Stop and consider for a moment how much more awful that would be – suddenly a whole segment of your life missing, erased. Why would you even want to lose one moment of good memories that occurred during that time? Remember, people with amnesia want their memories back, they want to know what happened to them. Many search for the missing pieces - is that what you really want to do?

Perhaps the events of the relationship created really hurtful memories. Could your self-esteem be shattered? Let’s step back and really get a handle on what has transpired and where you want to relegate it in the course of your life.

What most people want to do is keep the relationship in proper perspective and move on. They don’t want to follow the same road back to personal misery again. It is important to regain self-esteem and personal power.

With hypnosis, clients can reduce the bitter sting of the break-up without having a mental lobotomy for memories related to the length of the relationship. They can find a new balance where that old relationship slides into a dusty file in the back of a box in a far away storage room. Triggers that bring up strong memories are removed as an individual’s self-esteem improves.

Recently, one client stated at the end of their session that they didn’t know they could be so relaxed, euphoric and hopeful all at the same time.

As these new balances are found and improved upon, life gets better and better. Instead of letting memories run their life, clients discover how to handle life and relationships in new, healthful, and happy ways.

I’ve just heard from one of the winter weight reduction class students.

She’s having great success - amazing success – happy success!

For the first time in her adult life she has been shedding weight rather than gaining weight. She has her emotions under control and she feels good.

As of this week she is down 44 pounds.

That’s 44 pounds in under 4 months.

She never thought it could be so easy. When asked does hypnosis work for weight loss, she responds with a resounding YES.

She is now too small for her skinny clothes and is planning her new wardrobe from the “normal” size department. Whooeee!!!!! You go girl!!!!!
